Symptomatic and emblematic of this is a title which often recurs in his works: il Dio disimpegnato (the Disengaged God, as he puts it). It is the opposite of what was once considered “serious” art, which emerged in days gone by in France during the transition from Existentialism to political commitment, which generated a complex debate in twentieth century art. It is as if Anghelopolous is trying to tell us that his art is going in the opposite direction. (…) Anghelopolous subtracts himself and he demonstrates this in his vision, contrasted with existential commitment which precipitates into another dimension which recedes with respect to the advancement of what might be perceived as the real and day-to-day. (…) Anghelopolous’ art seems to be generated on the basis of this thinking. The textures are perceived as if scarred, oppressive, and one is tempted to compare them to lunar craters, satellite images, celestial filaments, voyages through skies thick with heavy, stormy clouds. Occasionally his perceptions remind us of Klee and sometimes Rothko. But always on his canvases we see echoes of blazes which are burning out, visions which we can hardly make out anymore, a sort of return to the future witnessed by those funny mechanisms, similar to old, printed circuitry for transmitters or receivers, of which we no longer have any clear recollection. He fashions them out of wood with exquisite taste and in fact, what he refers to as God’s Disengagement is the mirror image of the artists engagement in trying to imagine a dimension which doesn’t implicate the divine though it can’t possibly do without it. A curious perplexity pervades all his images and shows us an artist that knows how to be serious and ironic at the same time, whilst leaving us the absolute freedom to appreciate his work”.

(Claudio Strinati, Tra Materia e Anima, tra Memoria e Tempo.
